Tips

  • Check for spelling and typing mistakes. The best proofreader is… someone else. Another trick is to start at the end and go backwards, sentence by sentence, so you don’t get caught up in the meaning and miss mistakes. And don’t rely on the computer. It won’t catch ‘where’ vs ‘wear’, for instance.
  • Re-read, rewrite, edit. Shorter is almost always better.
  • Be positive, especially with your reasons for leaving a job.
  • Don’t mix tenses
  • Spell out your achievements. If you increased sales, by how much? Over how long? If you managed a team, how many people?
  • Present yourself professionally.
