Building Validation Surveyor (includes High Net Worth Claims)
Reports to: Operations Director
Working Hours: 08:30 to 17:30 (Monday to Friday, 40 Hour Working Week, although occasionally it will be necessary to work outside of these hours)
Based at: Home worker covering London and Southern England

The Role

The primary role of the Building Validation Surveyor is to assess claims on site, making policy liability decisions on behalf of the Insurer and preparing repair schedules/costs for repairs that the Insurer is liable for, under the terms of the policy. The majority of the claims that are visited and scoped will be handed over to the office team to manage any repairs needed to completion. There will be an element of case ownership, on larger/more complex claims or High Net Worth claims where it is preferable for any variations to be handled by the surveyor. You will also provide technical support to the validation team and claims handlers as and when required, in order to assist them in their duties.

Working in a fast paced environment where keeping your focus under pressure is an essential requirement; the surveyor will assess and validate claims, preparing reports and schedules within the client & company SLAs. They will agree the most cost effective repair methods for the job in question and anticipate any potential issues in-order that these are highlighted at the outset, keeping the Policyholders informed as to the insurers stance and helping to manage their expectations. Where necessary, they will liaise with our sub contracted repair partners regarding work specification and other relevant matters.

Where policy cover includes ?Trace and Access? you will be expected to make reasonable efforts to locate and expose the source of a leak, in order that the customer can arrange for the repairs to be undertaken to rectify the issue. Training will be provided, but experience of carrying out minor investigation works of this nature : along with identifying potential health & safety risks is preferred. You will document photographically before, during & after any investigation work and provide a report on completion within SLA. Asbestos awareness is another crucial aspect of the job. Training will be provided on asbestos sampling, as this is a chargeable service that Acumen offer to our clients, however general knowledge of common locations of ACMs is required. Training will also be provided on drying of building materials.

Follow up visits are occasionally required to complex claims or complaints, some of which will be claims that were not initially visited by the surveyor themselves. You will cover a set geographical area for the most part, although in times of surge or colleagues annual leave/sickness etc. visits out of area will be required. From time to time, you will be expected to carry out and/or assist the company in other duties that the company believe fall within their capability.

It is essential the applicant has excellent spoken and written English. It is essential to be able to demonstrate patience and show empathy, especially when communicating with Policyholders, whether this is face to face or over the telephone. The candidate must show an ability to diagnose problems in a logical manner and to be able to explain this in plain English to the policyholder and our client.

Experience

The ideal applicant will have a background in the Buildings Insurance Industry, specifically the contractor management & building repair network side of the process. Broad knowledge of domestic Buildings Insurance policies is essential, as is a good technical knowledge of building & reinstatement practices, costing & scheduling procedures and the correct applicant will have extensive experience in carrying out site surveys.

Main Job Responsibilities / Functions

1) Attend site and carry out site survey, gather all necessary information, take samples and moisture readings.

2) Evaluate information gathered from site survey along with comments made at FNOL stage to the office and make a liability decision based on circumstances and policy cover.

3) If claim is to be declined, inform Policyholder verbally whilst on site and follow up in writing, prepare report and submit to insurer.
