Job Description

This Avon based client has software running in almost every country in the world. The Toolchain team develops the core C++ language toolchain used by game studios to build games for PlayStation®3 and PS Vita. The core components have been developed to address the unique needs of commercial game developers. Emphasis is placed on short turnaround time as well as optimisations to improve code performance and memory footprint. Game code presents unique and difficult challenges to any language compilation chain, both in terms of complexity and scale.

The core components of the development toolchain are:

The C++ compiler specifically designed for game development.
The program linker optimized to address the size and complexity of game code.
Utility programs for object file manipulation and analysis.
Our client is currently looking for software engineers who have some experience or a strong interest in this area of software engineering.

Qualifications:

Computer science or related degree.
At least two years software development experience ** OR ** a strong interest in the area of compilers and the development toolchain. This vacancy would be suitable for a graduate who is interested in working in the area of compilation and toolchain development.
Skills Required:

Our client is seeking someone with the following technical skills and personal attributes:

Essential Technical Skills:

In depth knowledge of C/C++ development. The dominant language used in the games industry is C++ and candidates will require a solid understanding of C++.
Knowledge of software engineering practices such as unit testing, version control and so on.
Desirable Technical Skills:

Knowledge of the language compilation process, compilers, linkers and so on, or a strong interest in this area.
Knowledge of compilation technologies such as LLVM/Clang or GCC.
Experience in the game industry would be a definite plus.
Knowledge of computer architectures at the ISA level, for example an understanding of the use of caches.
Personal Skills:

Problem solving skills.
Good communication skills, both verbal and written.
Candidates must be motivated and adaptable to work in this fast moving industry.

Tenacity.
