Job Description

Lead Mechanical Design Engineer

Our client has a reputation for excellence in durable, lightweight, precision engineered instruments and low power motorised platforms.
Due to continued growth, they are seeking a lead mechanical designer to head its internal product design team and network of specialist contractors.

The role covers full product life cycle from concept development through design, qualification and release to manufacture.
Possibly from the automotive or arerospace/defence sectors, successful candidates will be able to demonstrate a track record as a design authority with successful delivery of multiple products or complex subsystems.

Excellent written and verbal technical communication skills.
Be decisive and lead by example as manager as well as significant individual contributor.
Prioritise effort to ensure on-time delivery of concurrent projects
Proactive “can-do” and problem-solving approach
Able to mentor and provide sound technical judgement to project teams and direct reports

Typical Duties and Responsibilities:
The lead designer will work on a number of specified projects. Tasks include:

Leading and motivating the team
Managing and scheduling resource
Defining the scope of work and ensuring accurate implementation of the same
Compliance with the company’s ISO 9001 development process
Advising on appropriate standards of work and ensuring compliance with these
Developing a professional relationship with contractors and customer development teams
Attending meetings with customers and suppliers on and off site.
Production of design-related documentation
Participation in the contract review process.
Recommending practical and innovative solutions to problems.
Co-operation with other departments and suppliers on design projects.
Supporting and overseeing all design work including material selection, risk analysis, modelling, simulation, bills of materials and drawings

Reporting to the Technical Director, the lead designer has a significant influence over new product development while also supporting existing product portfolio. This is a highly visible role working with

customers and specialist suppliers which requires occasional business travel.

PLEASE NOTE: The successful candidate will hold or be eligible to hold UK MoD Security Clearance.
